Bonaire's capital is Kralendijk. The island has a permanent population of 17,408 and an area of 294 km² (together with nearby uninhabited Klein Bonaire). The name Bonaire is thought to have originally come from the Caquetio word 'Bonay', a name that meant low country. The early Spanish and Dutch modified its spelling to Bojnaj and also Bonaire. The French influence while present at various times never was strong enough to make the assumption that the name means 'good air'. The airport is made famous due to the fact that its runway perimeter is right by the beach and tourists (myself included) have been known to hold onto the airport fence when aircraft are taking off- it was a bucket list item for me! Its worth checking flight arrival times though as we did not see any big jets i.e Boeing 747 operated by KLM as this service does not fly to the island every day. Most of the arrivals and departures on the day we were there were small inter-island planes- a mixture of turbo props and older jets. The international arrivals - the larger jets arrived during the early afternoon with a Delta and American Airlines Boeing 757. We also saw an Arke Fly Boeing 787 dreamliner, and the largest jet was an arrival from Paris - An Airbus A340-300. Its worth a look, but the beach is much smaller than older videos would indicate as quite alot of it has been lost to coastal erosion. Likewise if you do go for a swim the water gets deep quickly, so not really very good for small children. There are a few bars in the area, which are popular, but not great quality for cocktails and are quite expensive due to the captive audience of tourists and plane spotters. It was all good fun!

Blog | http://www.aperezvoyages.com Instagram | Aperezvoyages Facebook Page | https://www.facebook.com/aperezvoyages Snapchat : APerezVoyages Traveling to Curaçao was an amazing experience considering my short amount of time there. Not only did I accomplish a few dreams on the island but I got a great taste of the local culture through its music, people, and food / cuisine. I arrived on a Saturday night through Insel Air non stop from the states meeting up with a good friend I had met through CouchSurfing. He was awesome enough to show me around south of Willemstad for dinner from a food truck. He also took me to the north next morning to join me on a strenuous and amazing hike on Christoffelberg. This hike goes from flat to step rocky incline in one hour. Atop you get amazing 360 views of both Curaçao and the Caribbean sea. Later we hiked back down to drive around the north to see places such as Westpunt, Kenepa Beach or Knip Beach, Flamingos in Jan Kok, and later a Beach Party at Mambo Beach. The second full day, I took advantage of an all day sail tour with the Jonalisa through Bounty Adventure tours. We set sail from Caracasbaai on a rough sea journey to the island of Klein Curaçao, an uninhabited island south east of Curaçao. Here lies a picturesque blue water beautiful sand beach as well as an abandoned lighthouse in the center of the island. In contrast to this, the opposite side lies a shipwreck and washed up sailboat on its rocky rough coast with waves smacking the shore. Later that night I took advantage of dinner in Punda for a nice dinner. Last day, I took advantage of walking around Punda in Willemstad were the center of attractions are. I also crossed the Juliana Bridge to capture pictures and video of Otrobanda, the opposite side to see the old pastel colored buildings and way of life. From there, I set off to the airport en route to its neighboring island, Aruba. So my trip as always was not so much just a vacation, It was a trip to kill my curiosity of the unique melting pot of Dutch, Creole, and Spanish culture that lies on this fairly new country. Especially having the ability to see the unique difference in cultures between Aruba and Curacao. Bonaire is a Caribbean island which, together with Aruba and Curaçao, forms the group known as the ABC islands, located off the north coast of South America near the western part of Venezuela. Bonaire was part of the Netherlands Antilles until the country's dissolution on 10 October 2010, when the island became a special municipality within the country of the Netherlands. It is now considered the Caribbean Netherlands, or BES Islands comprising three special municipalities located in the Caribbean: the islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba.

A guide to Urk, this is our second vlog (video blog) about Urk, a small fishing town in the "bible belt" of The Netherlands that still maintains its past traditions. More at http://secretsofaworldtraveller.com/2015/06/07/city-full-of-old-traditions/ Urk is a typical city were traditions from past still stand strong today. Especially on days like Urkerdag or Vlaggetjesdag people dress up in traditional clothing and perform chores and other things like they did back in the day. Urk is a very religious city and almost all inhabitants are or were fishermen. One of the traditions that still is going strong on a daily basis is men wearing golden earrings with ships on the waves. Some of them also have an earring with their name in the other ear. This tradition stems from back in the day when men from Urk drowned while at sea they would get a proper burial paid for by the city if they had gold in their ears. On days like Urkerdag or Vlaagetjesdag you can eat smoked salmon, smoked eel, fried kibbeling, salted raw herring and so on. But you can also buy things for your boat, old jewelry, cutlery, plates, and other knick-knacks. It is amazing to get a glance of this otherwise so closed community. While we were there we found out what Urk means and where it comes from. Urk used to be an island, until the former Zuiderzee became the lake IJsselmeer. It’s best known as a fishing village. At the harbor there is always loads of activity going on. You enjoy the action from a distance on one of the many terraces. The same harbor also offers all kinds of water sports opportunities. Highlights of Urk Urk's history goes back over one thousand years. Visit the old village and you can still feel the history it holds. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings by walking through the old village or from the water by boat. It’s highly recommended to eat some fresh fish in the harbor. You can also enjoy excellent fish dishes at one of the local restaurants. The nearby eel farm and a trip over the lake with the tourist line to Enkhuizen are also highly recommended. Visit Urk Urk is a small village with a great history, ideal for lovely walks. Charming shops, museums, beach, harbor and pool are within walking distance. Do note that the tourist line between Enkhuizen and Urk only sails in summertime. Most inhabitants of Urk consider Sunday a day of rest, so it’s best to visit Urk on weekdays or on a Saturday. Aruba is an island in the southern Caribbean Sea, located about 1,600 kilometres (990 mi) west of the Lesser Antilles and 29 kilometres (18 mi)[5] north of the coast of Venezuela. It measures 32 kilometres (20 mi) long from its northwestern to its southeastern end and 10 kilometres (6 mi) across at its widest point. Together with Bonaire and Curaçao, Aruba forms a group referred to as the ABC islands. Collectively, Aruba and the other Dutch islands in the Caribbean are often called the Netherlands Antilles or the "Dutch Caribbean". Aruba is one of the four constituent countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands, along with the Netherlands, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. The citizens of these countries all share a single nationality: Dutch. Aruba has no administrative subdivisions, but, for census purposes, is divided into eight regions. Its capital is Oranjestad. Unlike much of the Caribbean region, Aruba has a dry climate and an arid, cactus-strewn landscape. This climate has helped tourism as visitors to the island can reliably expect warm, sunny weather. It has a land area of 179 km2 (69.1 sq mi) and is densely populated, with a total of 102,484 inhabitants at the 2010 Census. It lies outside Hurricane Alley.

The Netherlands Antilles (Dutch: Nederlandse Antillen [ˈneːdərˌlɑntsə ɑnˈtɪlə(n)] ( ), Papiamentu: Antia Hulandes), also referred to informally as the Dutch Antilles, was an autonomous Caribbean country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Although the country has now been dissolved, all of its constituent islands remain part of the kingdom under a different legal status and the term is still used to refer to these Dutch Caribbean islands. The Netherlands Antilles consisted of two distinct island groups. The ABC Islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are located in the southern Caribbean Sea, just off the Venezuelan coast. The SSS islands of Sint Maarten (actually a territory covering a bit less than half an island), Saba, and Sint Eustatius are in the Leeward Islands southeast of the Virgin Islands near the northern end of the Lesser Antilles, approximately 800–900 kilometers (500–560 miles) northeast of the ABC Islands. The Dutch colonized the various islands in the 17th century and united them in the new constituent state of the Netherlands Antilles in 1954. This video is targeted to blind users.
